About 45% of Tampa's homes predate 1980. Drain fields don't last forever, and on older septic systems a field that has absorbed decades of wastewater is more likely to slow down or fail.

Record Helene surge in 2024 (7.2 ft above mean higher high water at the East Bay gauge) and 16.51 inches of Milton rain at a gauge south of the city. After high water, it helps to keep water use low while the ground over the drain field is wet. If sewage is backing up into the house or pooling in the yard, call a septic company.
