Septic Pumping Interval Calculator

Get a rough idea of how often your septic tank may need pumping. The estimate comes from a published university table that links tank size and household size to years between pump-outs. Add the date of your last pump-out to see a suggested next date. Your answers stay in your browser; we only record that the tool was used.

1. What kind of system do you have?

Not sure? An ATU has a service contract and an operating permit in Florida. See aerobic treatment unit.

2. Tank size

An old pumping receipt, a home inspection report or your county's permit records may list it.

3. How many people live in the home year-round?
4. Do you use a garbage disposal?
5. When was the tank last pumped? (optional)

Leave blank if you don't know. A receipt from the pumping company usually shows the date.

How this tool works

The interval is read straight from Table 2 of Penn State Extension's Septic Tank Pumping guide, "Estimated Septic Tank Pumping Frequency," which the guide says is adapted from Mancl (1984). The table covers tanks of 900, 1,000, 1,250, 1,500 gallons and households of 1 to 8 people, for year-round homes using about 50 gallons of water per person per day. We use only the values printed in the table. If your tank size or household is not in it, the tool says so instead of guessing.

Estimated years between pump-outs (Penn State Extension, Table 2)
People 900 gal1,000 gal1,250 gal1,500 gal
1 11.012.415.618.9
2 5.25.97.59.1
3 3.33.74.85.9
4 2.32.63.44.2
5 1.72.02.63.3
6 1.31.52.02.6
7 1.01.21.72.1
8 0.81.01.41.8

Garbage disposal. EPA says that if you must use a garbage disposal, your tank will need to be pumped more often. New Jersey DEP's septic primer says a disposal can add as much as 50% more solids to the tank, and describes treating a disposal as one more person in the home (a 3-person household with a disposal is pumped as often as a 4-person household with the same tank). When you answer "yes," the tool reads the row for one more person. If that row is not in the table, you get the "outside the published table" result.

Aerobic treatment units. The table is for septic tanks, so the tool does not apply it to an ATU. Florida law requires an ATU owner to keep a service contract with a maintenance entity that inspects the unit at least twice a year (or, for an owner-occupied single-family home, to be permitted to maintain it personally after manufacturer-certified training), and an operating permit that is valid for 2 years. The maintenance entity is the best source for when your unit needs pumping.

Next date. If you enter your last pump-out, the tool adds the interval, rounded to the nearest month. It is a reminder date, not a deadline. Guests, seasonal use, a household that changes size, or heavy water use all change how fast solids build up. If you see slow drains, gurgling or wet spots over the drain field before then, see the signs a septic tank is full and call a septic company.

Pump-out prices by tank size are in the septic cost calculator (from $175–$300 for a 750-gallon tank in the national guides we use). To learn what a pump-out involves, see septic tank pumping, sludge and scum layers and our guide to how often to pump a septic tank in Florida.

Disclaimer: this tool gives a general estimate from a published table. It is not an inspection and does not replace the advice of a septic professional who has measured your tank.
