Florida law requires a permit to build a new septic system; the installer usually applies for it. For homes in Ocala, septic permits come from Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Onsite Sewage Program (Marion County) (850-245-8362). Since July 1, 2025, Florida DEP issues septic permits in Marion County directly; the county health department no longer does. Applications go through DEP's online portal at ostds.floridadep.gov.
